*Many Vegas casinos, for instance, have gone to five-player tables, because Cutting Edge Blackjack revealed that basic strategy players at tables with five or fewer players cannot win, over the long term. But, fortunately, players using Richard Harvey's methods do not have this disadvantage. Casinos have also introduced shuffling machines and continuously-shuffled cards tables in a direct attempt to thwart the power of Richard Harvey's breakthroughs, including the discovery of repeating phenomena. (A game called Digital 21, much like online blackjack, with video screens at each betting spot and computer-generated action, was a part of this, too. This game, however, did not catch on.) The timing of these casino countermeasures is unmistakable. After all, no other books in the past 47 years introduced anything truly new, as did Richard Harvey's. Although Richard Harvey cautions those considering blackjack as a profession that it takes a unique combination of talent, skills and devotion to learning as well as the right personality to deal with a demanding career with an unstructured schedule, it can't be argued that blackjack is worth considering not just as a source of fun but also of profit, especially in these tough economic times, for those capable of mastering Richard Harvey's system.

He did, after all, begin his blackjack career in a time of economic need.

"I started playing blackjack as a profession when I was laid off from a job and couldn't find another job in my chosen profession. I'd already spent a year and a half devising my own blackjack system, primarily at that time through theoretical math models and statistical studies, and my system had proven to be a winner, in computer tests.

"So it was a no-brainer. Needing a source of income, I went straight down to Atlantic City and seemlessly went to work, as it were, as a blackjack player. And my system worked great, just as it had in tests and practice rounds at home.

"I realized early on, however, that I needed to do more research to develop answers to questions and problems that became evident only at the casino. I noticed repeating patterns and I wanted to know: were they truly occurring and could I find a way to profit from them? I needed to devise scientific loss-limits that enabled me to identify when the cards were bad and get me out without huge losses. I also wanted to develop scientific methods to determine my likelihood of winning in the next round, bot make more precise bets. And so on. And so that led to my next multi-year research project, based upon real blackjack card data, that resulted in a whole new way of playing the game, from top to bottom. And that made winning that much easier.

"Now, even with all that, I also learned over that years that being a professional entails not a little on-the-job training. Blackjack players, for instance, can unfortunately get barred (except in New Jersey and one other Western state, where state law forbids casinos from barring players). So I needed to adjust my approach to limit my risk of getting barred. As readers of Blackjack The Smart Way can see, in fact, I realized there were a lot of non-strategy issues that needed to be addressed in order to win to the max.

"So, yes, if players are truly devoted to learning their craft and suited to playing the game as a profession, or as a means of making some money, then why not? I went that route and it's a viable option, for those who love the game as much as I do and are capable of mastering it."
